A. The Local Transport

Crete has a main carriageway on the north that connects the four major cities, starting from west Chania, Rethimno, Herakleio and Agios Nicolaos. There are two airports one at Chania (65 km from Rethymno) and one at Herakleio (80 km from Rethymno), and three major ports in the same cities and in Rethimno.

Road Connection of Mirthios-Plakias with the main carriageway of Crete

This is the backbone of the transport in Crete, you can enter using one of the above ports or airports. Every half-hour, buses run along the carriageway between the major cities. At the taxi pick-up point in the airports, the displayed price list includes Plakias as one of their destinations. To come from the airports or ports to Plakias, there is only one road via Rethimno.

B. From Rethymno to ANNA Apartments in Mirthios-Plakias

A new main road connects Plakias with the city of Rethimno at the north about thirty kilometers away. Buses run regularly every day between Plakias and Rethimno, between April and October no less then five  times daily.

Leaving Rethimno towards Anna apartments in Mirthios-Plakias, you follow the road (inland-south direction) that goes uphill towards the village of Spili (if you are coming due to the carriageway from Heraklion or Chania airport, you will follow the exit to the right pointed by a big green sign "SPILI"). You will keep going for about 17 kilometers until you find a right junction WITH A SIGN to "Plakias" and "Preveli". You will follow this road to the right and after about 500 meters you will pass through the village of "Koxare", and 4 km after you will enter the "Kourtaliotis" gorge. 500 meters after the exit of the gorge you will find the village "Asomatos".

Leaving the village "Asomatos" you will find a junction to the left going to "Plakias" but YOU WILL KEEP GOING STRAIGHT to Mirthios (you will see a sign to Mirthios). After 2 kilometers you will find the village of "Mariou". One kilometer after "Mariou" you will turn right to the junction going to "Mirthios" and after about 500 meters you will enter the village of Mirthios where Anna's apartments are located at the right side of the road in the entrance of the village.

C. Beaches and villages around Plakias

In the surrounding area of Plakias, there are five villages that are connected by a ring road. Starting from north-west going to north-east we have Mirthios, Mariou and Asomatos. Then going down to south-east we have the famous monastery of Preveli and the Preveli palm beach , moving towards to south-west the villages of Lefkogia and Plakias. From April to October at least three times daily, a local bus runs between the above places including the beach of Souda which is on the south-west and the beach of Damnoni which is between Lefkogia and Plakias. There is also a little train that runs a few times daily all around the area. Another small boat runs between Souda beach, Plakias harbor, Damnoni beach and Preveli palm beach.
